Kranj: Below, Above, and In the City

Kranj’s Trio of Self-Guided Tours

Visit the three main attractions in the old town center of Kranj: the highest bell tower above the city, the Cabinet of Inventor Puhar in the heart of the city, and the tunnels beneath the old Kranj—under the city.

Within six-hundred-year-old walls, 163 steps wind up to the 40-meter-high viewing platform of St. Cantianus Church’s bell tower. Along the way, the walk reveals the history of the church, which is one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Slovenia. When you reach the top, you’re rewarded with the most stunning view—from the city on the rock all the way to Slovenia’s highest peaks.

Continue your journey to the city center, where you’ll uncover the secrets of the photographic studio of Janez Puhar — the inventor of photography on glass and the world’s first selfie. In his former studio, you can view original tools he used, as well as a room of moving images and illusions. Visitors can even dress in 19th-century costumes and create their own glass portrait.

End your visit to Kranj like a mole — 30 meters underground in the Tunnels beneath the old town of Kranj, home to the SOS Proteus Information Center, a pioneering refuge for the endangered olm (proteus). A special highlight in the tunnels is the simulation of an air raid, along with an exhibition of minerals and fossils, cave-dwelling animals, and even real stalactites — a true challenge for curious explorers.
