Kranj Wine Route

During two weekends in November, from 21 to 23 and from 28 to 30 November 2025, you can experience the wine-growing regions of Slovenia and their food in the Tunnels under the old town of Kranj. Due to overwhelming interest, we have extended this event to both Sundays.

The barrel-shaped door at the entrance to the Tunnels is opening once again this year and the vineyard rattle above it calls visitors from near and far. It’s time for the Wine Route in the Tunnels under the old town of Kranj – the most visited wine event in Slovenia, taking place in its “longest wine cellar”. Slovenian winemakers and creators of fine cuisine invite you to taste their produce. The longest wine route in Slovenia will take place over two weekends in November, from 21 to 23 and 28 to 30 November. Visitors from all over Slovenia will once again have the opportunity to taste the best Slovenian wines, accompanied by tastings of cheese, bread and meat products, as well as sweet and savoury specialities.

Over 250 different winemakers have presented their wines in the 15 years of this event so far and every year it is attended by more than 6000 wine lovers from all over Slovenia and abroad. The main purpose of the event is to educate visitors about wine and the culture of drinking it, as well as to present different wine varieties, suppliers, their work and products. Visitors can learn about wine production, its types and specialities. In addition to wine, you can taste also cheese, bread and meat products, olive oil and various sweet and savoury products. The Rokovnjači from the village of Besnica stand out as a local group of enthusiasts and they will be roasting chestnut and selling their home-made produce.

Tunnels under the old town of Kranj
The underground tunnels of Kranj are the work of human hands. They were built at the end of World War II and originally served as a shelter for the town population. They are 1300 metres long and were carved through the conglomerate rock. They have a climate that is similar to the one in natural caves, which is why the tunnels are now home to some rare cave animals such as cave locusts and orb-weaving cave spiders, as well as real stalactites. This makes a visit to the tunnels a special experience.

The conditions in such caves are perfect for wine to be chilled to just the right temperature. Add to this the fact that there is no signal in the tunnels and visitors can relax more easily when they disconnect from their mobile phones, and you will see that the Wine Route in the Tunnels under the old town of Kranj is a great opportunity to have a good time in pleasant company while tasting some delicacies and maybe even buying the best Christmas presents, as the event takes place just before Advent. The combination of all this – great wines, local cuisine, historical heritage and a lively atmosphere – puts the Wine Route in Kranj on the list of must-visit destinations.

The longest wine cellar in wine-growing Slovenia
The Wine Route is 1300 metres long, its entrance is located at the Jelen slope and its exit at Pungert. When visitors purchase their ticket, they receive a glass, a bag for their glass and a bag in which to put the goodies they buy. The Wine Route in the Tunnels puts Kranj on the map of the most successful oenological and gastronomic events. We invite you to be part of this.
