While Jože Plečnik’s most celebrated works can be found in Ljubljana, where they form part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, a significant part of his legacy is also scattered across the Gorenjska region.
This three-day cycling route follows Plečnik’s architectural trail through Slovenia’s historic towns,
connecting Kamnik, Kranj, Tržič, Jesenice, Radovljica and Škofja Loka.
Route overview: Ljubljana – Kamnik – Kranj – Tržič – Begunje – Radovljica – Škofja Loka:
Begin your journey in Ljubljana, the heart of Plečnik’s creative vision. Explore iconic landmarks such as Triple Bridge, the Central Market, the National and University Library, and the Križanke complex before heading north towards Kamnik.
In Kamnik, Plečnik’s presence can be felt throughout the town and its surroundings. Visit the baptistry in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the distinctive façade on the Main Square, the remarkable Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre in the Church of St James, the bridge over the Nevljica stream and the Kamnik Town railway station. Those wishing to explore further can continue to Nevlje or Kamniška Bistrica, home to King Alexander’s Hunting Lodge.
The route then leads to Kranj, where Plečnik’s arcades, staircase and fountain by the Church of the Holy Rosary create a memorable entrance to the historic town centre. The nearby Prešeren Theatre also bears the unmistakable mark of his architectural vision. Overnight in Kranj.
On the second day, cycle to Tržič and the village of Lom pod Storžičem, where the Church of St Catherine preserves furnishings designed according to Plečnik’s plans. Continue to Brezje and admire the square in front of the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, designed by Plečnik, before heading to Begunje na Gorenjskem to discover the Brezjanka Pavilion and the Jožamurka Pavilion, both remarkable examples of his work.
In the afternoon, continue to Jesenice and visit the Church of St Leonard, renowned for its richly symbolic entrance doors designed according to Plečnik’s vision.
On the final day, return towards Radovljica and continue to Kropa, the cradle of Slovenia’s iron-forging tradition. The Iron Forging Museum preserves numerous handcrafted objects, including wrought-iron candlesticks designed by Plečnik together with master blacksmith Jože Bertoncelj.
Before reaching Škofja Loka, stop in Dolenja Vas to see Plečnik’s monument dedicated to the martyrs of the Selca Valley. Conclude your journey in Škofja Loka, one of Slovenia’s most beautiful medieval towns, where the Church of St James showcases elements inspired by Plečnik’s designs. Return to Ljubljana by bicycle or train.
